Loading up on fresh fruits and vegetables at the grocery store? If you’re wondering which veggies and fruits have the most and least pesticides on them, you might want to check out this year’s, the 2017 Dirty Dozen List and Clean15 List. 

The 2017 Dirty Dozen List was announced this month and if you saw the list from the last year (LINK), you probably will notice certain similarities with the 2017 Dirty Dozen List.

For the 2nd year in a row, strawberries are on the top of the Dirty Dozen list created by the Environmental Working Group. Spinach, nectarines, and apples followed in the 2017 rankings when it comes to yields covered with the most pesticides.

So, next time you’re looking the crop aisle, you may want to keep well away from a regular fruit beloved in pastries and whole-fruit forms alike.

The 2017 Dirty Dozen List and Clean 15 List

The 2017 Dirty Dozen List

Environmental Working Group released the 2017 Dirty Dozen list as a solid reminder that we still have a lot of work to do when it comes to cleaning up the food system. The annual 2017 report found that nearly 70% of 48 non-organic trials tested positive for no less than 1 pesticide. (Unfortunately, in most cases the numbers were much higher.) And what’s more: A single strawberry sample had 20 diverse pesticide remains.

And while spinach is loaded with many essential vitamins, like calcium, there is one reason to always try to pick organic. Experts found DDT, which a neurotoxic insecticide banned in the USA, in a shocking number of samples.

A “Clean 15” list is comprised in the report as well, detecting the non-organic yield least liable to be polluted with pesticide levels. As a nutritionist, I recommend growing and/or choosing organic as much as possible, but if your selection is limited or you’re on a budget, these lists aid you to focus the attention on avoiding the dirtiest fruits and vegetables.

  • Frozen Sweet Peas
  • Papayas
  • Asparagus
  • Mangos
  • Eggplant
  • Honeydew
  • Kiwi
  • Cantaloupe
  • Cauliflower
  • Grapefruit

Some papayas and sweet corn sold in the U.S are GMOs, therefore choose organic in order to avoid GMO kinds of these produces.

Conclusion:

Environmental Working Group released their annual list of fruits and vegetables that are prone to be contaminated with pesticides (the 2017 Dirty Dozen List) along with the Clean 15 list that includes fruits and vegetables that are least likely to be contaminated with pesticides this year.

Again, strawberries are on the top of the Dirty Dozen list (just like the last year), but pear and spinach were also highlighted for very pesticide residues.

Pesticides are related to dozens of health issues, including symptoms of ADHD, Parkinson’s, autism, some cancers, and an entire host of other problems.

This list should in no way discourage you from consuming fruits and vegetables, however, it should make you weary of present chemical farming. Bugs and microbes have certain unwanted side effects (including destroying beneficial microbes and soil health) from using chemicals to fumigate the soil and destroy weeds. So, choose organic fruits and vegetables whatever you can!
