How do people with autism see the world?

About autism

Autism is a spectrum condition. This means that, while all autistic people share some difficulties, their disorder will affect them in various ways. There are autistic people who are able to live pretty independent lives, but there are also autistic people who may have supplementary learning disabilities and therefore, need full-time specialist support.

You can also find this condition under the name ‘autism spectrum disorder’ or ASD, and may confuse you, but you should know that refers to the same condition.

How do people with autism see the world

Even though scientists are making numerous investigations, still there isn’t exact cause of autism. Some researchers suggest that a combination of factors, as environmental and genetic, might be making some changes in the development of the brain.

However, one thing is for sure – autism is not initiated by a person’s upbringing or their social circumstances, and definitely is not a fault of the person with this condition.

There are 3 main areas of difficulty which all people with autism share. They are:

  1. social communication difficulties;
  2. social interaction difficulties, and
  3. social imagination difficulties

Autistic people may also have other characteristics of autism, like learning disabilities, sensory senility, love of routines, and their own special interests.

Through the eyes of autistic person

According to the National Autistic Society (UK), most of the autistic people have said that the world, to them, is a huge mass of people, areas and events that they have problems to make sense of, and can cause them great anxiety.

Above all, to understand and relate to other people, as well as to take part in normal family and social life can be really hard for them.

Moreover, there are some autistic people who appear to know, instinctively, how to talk and interact with each other. Autistic people have difficulties with both non-verbal and verbal language. Many people with this condition literally understand the language and often think that people mean exactly what they say, which makes them really emotional and mostly angry. They may find it difficult to understand or use:

  • the tone of voice;
  • facial expressions;
  • jokes, and
  • common phrases (for ex. The phrase “It’s really cool!” which people use to say that something is great, a person with autism will understand that “is really cold”).

There is no cure for this condition, but there are many institutions and organizations that can help them fit in the society as much as they can.

Conclusion:

Today, there are specific experts who can train, teach, and give information to the families how to live with an autistic person. Many education approaches and treatments are already making differences in the life of people who have autism.
