‘The Wire’ Star James Ransone Dies at 46 as Family, Friends and Co-Stars Pay Emotional Tributes

Hollywood is mourning the heartbreaking loss of actor James Ransone, best known for his unforgettable role as Ziggy Sobotka in the critically acclaimed crime drama The Wire. He was 46 years old.

According to the Los Angeles Medical Examiner, Ransone’s death was officially ruled a suicide, leaving fans and fellow actors shocked and deeply saddened.

Following the tragic news, Jamie McPhee honored her husband with a heartbreaking Instagram post alongside a photo of the couple together.

“I told you I have loved you 1000 times before and I know I will love you again,” she wrote. “You told me I need to be more like you and you need to be more like me — and you were so right.”

She continued by thanking him for their children and the life they built together.

“Thank you for giving me the greatest gifts — you, Jack and Violet. We are forever.”

McPhee also shared a link supporting the National Alliance on Mental Illness, encouraging awareness around mental health struggles.

Throughout his life, Ransone openly spoke about the trauma he experienced during childhood.

In a 2021 Instagram post, the actor revealed he had suffered sexual abuse from a tutor while growing up in Maryland. He described the experience as something that left him carrying “a lifetime of shame and embarrassment.”

Ransone also spoke candidly about his battles with addiction, explaining that the trauma contributed to years of struggles with alcohol and heroin dependency.

Despite those challenges, many admired him for his honesty, vulnerability, and willingness to speak openly about mental health and recovery.

Actor Wendell Pierce wrote on X:

Oscar-winning director Sean Baker, who worked with Ransone on Starlet and Tangerine, also expressed his grief.

Madeleine McGraw, his young co-star from The Black Phone, described him as “such a beautiful soul” and “so genuinely supportive.”

“My heart is completely shattered,” she shared.
