Al Roker’s absence from Today in late 2022 was more than a break from television. The longtime weather anchor was hospitalized with a blood clot in his leg that sent clots to his lungs. He later faced internal bleeding and underwent major surgery. The ordeal kept him off the air for nearly two months, but he returned to the show on January 6, 2023. An Absence Viewers Noticed
Roker had been a familiar presence on Today for decades. When he was missing from the broadcast in November 2022, he explained that he had been admitted to the hospital after doctors found the blood clot. He said at the time that he was receiving care and working toward recovery.
The illness also kept him from hosting the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, an event he had covered for 27 years. For viewers accustomed to seeing him there, the empty place in the broadcast made his absence especially visible. Roker watched the parade from a hospital bed instead.
He was discharged in time to spend Thanksgiving with his family, but his recovery took a frightening turn. Internal bleeding sent him back to the hospital. Doctors found two bleeding ulcers, and what had begun as one serious medical problem had become a complicated struggle involving multiple conditions.
A Far More Serious Ordeal
When Roker returned to Today, he told viewers that he had lost half his blood while doctors worked to find the source of the bleeding. He underwent a lengthy operation that included work on his colon, the removal of his gallbladder and repair of part of his small intestine. His wife, Deborah Roberts, described him as a “living, breathing miracle.”
For much of that period, the audience saw only the updates that Roker and his family were ready to share. The full severity became clearer later. Roker has said his family shielded him from some of the worst fears surrounding his condition while he was still trying to get well.
His absence was not a mystery with a hidden celebrity twist. It was a medical emergency, followed by another medical emergency, and then the slow work of recovery. The details mattered because each development changed what doctors and his family had to manage.
Recovery and Return
Roker was discharged from the hospital in December 2022. By the time he returned to Today in January, he could speak about what had happened, thank the people who cared for him and reunite with his colleagues on air. The return was joyful, but it did not erase how difficult the preceding weeks had been.
Recovery continued after the cameras welcomed him back. In December 2023, Roker reflected on reaching a walking milestone, describing the months since his hospitalization as a long road with many people helping him along the way. He also returned to the Thanksgiving parade in 2023, one year after illness had forced him to miss it.
Looking back, Roker has spoken about how close he came to losing his life and how much support he received from his family and medical team. His story carries emotional weight without needing exaggerated claims about what might happen next.
